      1.      Welcome to AVTpro

       

      AVTpro is a professional certification in subtitling aimed at maintaining high professional standards by recognising translators in the AVT sector who possess the linguistic knowledge and technical skills necessary to deliver quality language services. The certification will provide you with a seal of excellence and professionalism in a highly competitive market.

       

      2.      Two certifications

       

      There are two different certifications: AVTpro Subtitle Translation and AVTpro Subtitle Creation.

       

      AVTpro Subtitle Translation certifies that you are familiar with subtitling and can produce your translation when working with a template containing pre-spotted subtitles.

       

      AVTpro Subtitle Creation certifies that you can spot your subtitles and produce the translation into your working language.

       

      3.      About the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam

       

      The AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam has been designed as a set of four automated tasks to test your linguistic and cultural knowledge in your working language pair as well as your theoretical and practical knowledge of subtitling.

       

      The AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam is not a certification in itself, but it is a prerequisite to have successfully passed it before you can attempt to take the AVTpro Subtitle Translation and/or the AVTpro Subtitle Creation exams.

       

      The exam can only be taken online.

       

      4.      Before you take the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam

       

      Before taking the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam, you should make sure that you have read these instructions carefully together with the subtitling Style Guide detailing the technical and linguistic dimensions for your language combination.

       

      Please ensure that you have a stable internet connection before beginning the online exam and that you have a period of undistracted time, at least two hours, in order to complete the tasks.

       

      5.      Pre-requisites to take the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam

       

      The AVTpro certifications assess professional subtitling skills to a graduate/post graduate level but is designed as a professionally applied vocational qualification.

       

      There are no set pre-requisites as such. However, you are strongly advised to ensure that your level of knowledge in the source language is at the very least equivalent to an Honours degree and that your skills in subtitling are of a professional standard. If you do not possess the recommended language and subtitling knowledge, you may not pass your assessment.

       

      We don’t recommend any centres where you can prepare for this certification, and it is envisaged that much of this qualification can be studied independently. In any case, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are sufficiently prepared for the exam, that you are competent in both the source and target languages and cultures, that you have a good knowledge of subtitling, and that you can subtitle at reasonable speed and accuracy to a professional working level.

       

      6.     Registering for the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam

       

      When you sign up for the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam, you will be provided with a unique link that will grant you access to the exam. All the marking is done automatically.

       

      7.      What does the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam consist of?

       

      The exam consists of four different tasks:

       

      Task 1

      Knowledge of subtitling theory

      10 mins

      Task 2

      Knowledge of English (EN) language

      15 mins

      Task 3

      Knowledge of translation, from English (EN) into your target language (TL)

      15 mins

      Task 4

      Knowledge of subtitling practice (EN > TL)

      15 mins

      Total time for all four tasks

      55 mins

       

      8.      How long does the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam last?

       

      • There are two timers: the exam timer and the task timer.

       

      • Task timer: it runs per task, from when you click on “Start” button.
        1. All four tasks are timed individually, as indicated in the table above, and the task timer cannot be stopped once a task has been started. However, you can stop the task timer between tasks.

       

      • Exam timer: it runs continuously from when you start the exam and cannot be stopped.
        1. Completing the four tasks of the exam will take you a total of 55 minutes, but you’ll be given a maximum of two hours to complete it, in case you want to take a break between tasks. After the two hours, you won’t be able to submit answers for the questions that haven’t been answered, so make sure that you have completed all four tasks, and submitted them, before the two hours lapse.
        2. As long as there is enough time left on the exam timer, you can take your time before starting the next task, which will effectively start the task timer for that particular task.

       

      • Please note that your answers cannot be modified once submitted, even if you have time remaining in the clock.

       

      9.      Task 1: Knowledge of subtitling theory

       

      The aim of this task is to evaluate your theoretical and practical knowledge on the topic of subtitling.

      Instructions: You will be presented with 10 multiple-choice questions, in English, on the theory and practice of subtitling, and will have to select the correct answer. In the case of four options, only one is correct. In the other cases, either TRUE or FALSE is correct.


      Time: To complete this task you have a maximum of 10 minutes to answer 10 multiple-choice questions.

       

      You will have to answer one question at a time, making sure that you are happy with your answer before you proceed as you will not be able to go back to questions you have already answered.

       

      The pass mark for this activity is a minimum of 7 correct answers.

       

      10.  Task 2: Knowledge of English (EN)

       

      The aim of this task is to evaluate your knowledge of the English grammar, use of language, and vocabulary.


      Instructions: You will be presented with 20 multiple-choice questions, in English, focusing on grammar, use of idioms and colloquialisms. Each question contains four options, of which only one is correct.

       

      Time: To complete this task you have a maximum of 15 minutes to answer 20 multiple-choice questions.

       

      You will have to answer one question at a time, making sure that you are happy with your answer before you proceed as you will not be able to go back to questions you have already answered.

       

      The pass mark for this activity is a minimum of 15 correct answers.
